Lonnie Hutchinson is an Auckland based New Zealand artist of Māori (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kuri ki Ngāi Tahu), Samoan and European descent.
Hutchison completed a Diploma in Textile Printing from Auckland Institute of Technology in 1992 and a Bachelor of Design from Unitec Institute of Technology in 1997. She also completed a Diploma of Education in 1999 and has worked as a teacher. Hutchinson is well recognised for her sculptural "cut-outs" in which she uses black builders paper to create captivating patterns. The intricate works reference traditional Maori and Pacific motifs and use a delicate interplay of light, shadow and space to express social, political, cultural and gender concerns. Hutchinson worked with Auckland Print Studio in 2016 to complete a series of woodcuts reminiscent of her sculptural work.
Hutchinson's characteristic bold patterns were presented with injections of colour to create a successful suite of images.

Hutchinson's work is widely collected in both public and private collections including the Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, Banff, Canada, The Dowse Art Museum, New Zealand High Commission, Washington, Massey University and David Teplitsky Collection, Hong Kong. She has an impressive exhibition record with regular group and solo exhibitions over the past 20 years including Black Bird, Gus Fisher Gallery, 2015; Steal Paper Acrylic, Snowwhite Gallery, 2012; Home AKL, The Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland, 2010;  Pasifika Styles, University of Cambridge Museum, UK, 2006-2008; L'Art Urbain du Pacifique (Urban Art from the Pacific), Castle of Saint-Aurent, Limousin, France, 2005; Samoa Contemporary, Pataka, Porirua, 2008 and This Show Is What I Do, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, 2005; Coconut Dreams, SoFA Gallery, Christchurch, 2000. Lonnie also regularly contributes to collective art projects including TRANS VERSA (2006) in Santiago, Chile and collaborated with students from HITLabNZ (Human Interface Technology Laboratory), the University of Canterbury in 2005.

Lonnie is represented by Bartley and Company Art in Wellington (NZ), Jonathan Smart Gallery in Christchurch (NZ) and Milford Galleries in Dunedin (NZ).
