About the work
'The Horrible & Terrible Deeds & Words of the Very Renowned Trumpagruel' was inspired by the books 'Gargantua and Pantagruel' written by François Rabelais in the 16th Century, which tell of the adventures and misadventures of two bumbling giants. P.P.O.W Gallery in New York exhibited the works in January 2019 to much acclaim. 'Trumpagruel' has been collected by The University of California, Davis and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AOG). The works are due to be exhibited later this year at AOG in 'Political Satire Through History', alongside works by James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson and Honoré Daumier (among others). Birk also completed a lithograph 'Proposal for a Monument to What About-ism' that contributed to his ongoing project series 'Imaginary Monuments.' The works in the series are fictional, fantastical monuments based on historic world documents and treaties intended to examine and ponder their effects on our contemporary lives. The project is being published by the Catharine Clark Gallery and Paul Mullowney Printing, both in San Francisco, with private support. They appeared in a debut institutional exhibition 'Monumental' at the Long Beach Museum of Art from January 25th to April 2019.
